Ran into this at work. If you use CSS to rotate text vertically, and have Cleartype turned on, Internet Explorer cannot anti-alias the text properly and you get visual vomit. Seems to be a known issue from some searching on the net here and there.

Flex baby: most elements (don’t know exactly which ones, maybe all) have a rotation attribute that allows you to supply a desired angle.
