Recapping the last 18 years

Updated for 2010.

So I just got on Facebook after my friend David bugged me about it for a while. So I figured a quick life recap would be a good way to avoid repeating myself over and over;

  • 1990 – graduate high school, head off to University of Texas at Austin. Basically lead a boring life for 3 years with little to do. Basically study, stay in shape, and learn some stuff about this and that.
  • 1993 – working on a kinesiology degree, decided to spend a summer marching drum corps. Somehow got back involved in color guard again, so figured why not, looks like fun. Plus, girls in spandex and not much else.
  • 1994 – got bored and a little scared of actually doing that for a real job, decide to spend another summer doing drum corps, this time with the Cavaliers.
  • Fall/Winter 1994 – head to CA to teach a marching band (yeah, doing color guard STILL – blame Pam) there for a few months. Then move to Ohio to march in a winterguard called Escapade with a bunch of friends from drum corps. Have a hell of a good time for 7 months. Throw a great six at finals. Make up for three boring years of college.
  • 1995 – decide to hang out in Ohio. Pick up a couple of teaching gigs at local high schools, go back to college part time. Spend several years partying, teaching color guard, studying. Also going broke. Live in the same apartment for way too long with way too many people.
  • 1998 – in an ironic state of affairs, win WGI teaching a high school group that kicks the ass of the group my future wife JK was in at the time (yes, my wife is 8 years younger than me. And much better looking.) Finally graduate with a degree in Applied Mathematics. Realize too late there’s no jobs for that. Spend several months being depressed. Pick up a job working for a computer company owned by a friend in the fall. Start to make money at age 26. Realize money is good.
  • 2001 – company goes out of business and I switch to a company that makes marching band uniforms. Meet my future wife for the first official time (first unofficial time was spent outside my friends apartment as he was getting his ass chewed out by her friend, his fiance at the time. Complicated). Actually met my wife in the back yard of the house we ended up renting for 3 years. Handle all the computer work for them and start really learning more. Still teaching color guard.
  • 2002 – Get engaged.
  • 2003 – Get married. Now THAT was a good time.
  • 2004 – Realize it’s time to quit that color guard shit.
  • 2007 – Get antsy and feel like I could be doing more at work. Eventually switch jobs to a local big company as a web developer. Realize I’ve got a lot to learn.
  • 2008 – Grace arrives. I switch jobs internally but keep doing the same thing.
  • 2009 – reading a lot about javascript and deciding to start my own business. Trying to get my self in some kind of shape (I can’t believe I let it go like this – I spent 2 years getting up at 4 AM to go the gym back in the day). And loving my family – there is nothing better. Life is good.
  • 2010 – doing a lot of mobile work at my job – playing with Kindle, Android, Palm Pre, iPhone, and a bunch of others. Learning Objective C for mac/iPhone programming. Going to start back to school at the University of Dayton for a Masters in Computer Science in May. Still thinking about my own business, but right now focusing on learning. But still, life is good.

Ok, your turn. What have you been up to for 18 years?
