About
Ruthless Automation is a name I swear I read somewhere, but have never been able to track down. It’s the way I want to approach my work – there’s never an excuse to do something by hand when you can make it easier with some up-front sweat equity.
Currently I’m a web developer in Dayton, Ohio, with a focus on writing HTML and CSS by hand, and enhancing things with jQuery and YUI where needed.
I love beautiful UIs (actually anything that’s done well) and hope to make myself into a designer over time, but want to keep writing code as well. I do that in Emacs and nothing else.
I’m very interested in mobile, especially the iPhone, and I’m learning Objective C on my own to try my hand at an app. The Nexus One is the second best phone I’ve ever seen, though, and it keeps me honest about web apps versus native.
Finally, I live with my wonderful wife and our daughter Grace. Being a father rewards me in ways I never could have imagined, and I try to appreciate that at least once a day.

New (baby) skill of the day
Grace put the mail in the mailbox when I opened it today without any prompting from me. I know she’s been with me when I took it out before, but I don’t know if she ever has seen me put mail in.
We now return to irregularly scheduled posting
Many things on my mind. Time to start posting again. Election Day First, go vote today. Obama 08. I was in line at 5:45 this morning, and was third. The person who got there first arrived at 5:15 AM. Polls opened at 6:35 or so. I asked for a paper ballot, more because I wanted …
